Profile
of Jessica Berad, Intern, Society
for Contemporary Craft & The Western
PA Museum Council, 4/05
By Amanda Harber
PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern
Jess Berad found her PPW internship by sheer serendipity. As her
junior year ended and Jess had finished the requirements for her
BA in Art History, she wanted to do something more valuable with
her academic career rather than simply taking random elective courses.
Jess currently interns at the Society for Contemporary Craft in
the Strip District, a unique placement as it is a joint internship:
Jess also works with the Western Pennsylvania Museum Council. This
internship links Jess’s interest in art and writing, “the
best of both worlds.”
Her main projects include assisting the sales and events coordinator
of the SCC with research and solicitation to promote exhibitions
and expand audiences and writing a media resource guide for the
WPMC, something that will be distributed to media outlets in order
to position WPMC members as experts on newsworthy topics. In addition,
Jess writes press releases for the WPMC.
Jess’s most memorable experience at her internship was an
opening night at the gallery. Even though her internship does not
directly relate to her current career goals (fashion), Jess knows
that the writing skills she has learned in the PPW program will
help her get ahead whatever path she takes.
No matter what her future career leads her to, Jess believes that
the PPW certificate will help her enhance the writing skills she’ll
need. She would tell students interested in the PPW program that
“the PPW internships are a great opportunity. Not only do
you have to experience writing in the internship, you come to better
understand writing outside of a classroom. The certificate will
also enhance the quality of your writing and the skills you will
need after graduation.”
