PPW Intern Profiles

Profile of Mark Wanczak, Intern,
Larson OBrien Advertising PR Interactive, 4/07

by Casey Buxton, PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

Mark Wanczak is an active and hard-working Pitt senior. As the President of the Pitt Men’s Intercollegiate Soccer Club and English writing student, he pursued the PPW Certificate as a way to give his nonfiction major a broader application for his post-graduate job search. “The program has turned out to be, hands down, the best decision I’ve made academically,” Mark says. As part of his certificate schedule, Mark decided to intern at Larson O’Brien Advertising/PR/Interactive during Spring 2007.

Larson O’Brien is a marketing communications firm that creates websites, advertisements, public relations, and continuing education programs. Often arriving to work before the bosses, Mark won great copywriting experience in a variety of subjects. There was definitely a learning curve with the internship, but Mark learned valuable professional lessons, such as writing in the company’s voice and style. Aside from his copywriting tasks, Mark was in charge of setting up photography shoots for projects and worked closely with Account Executives on various assignments.

Mark’s shining moment was when he was offered a full-time paid summer position at the close of his internship. He regards it as a great honor and considers working at Larson O’Brien post-graduation a serious possibility.

Mark appreciates the clear perspective of the real world that his internship provided. Larson O’Brien cemented his dreams of working in advertising and public relations by giving him a taste of what life at an agency would be like. If given his ultimate dreams in life, Mark would like to be his own boss and own his own agency, specializing in advertising and crisis communications.

Mark’s advice to interns: Bust your butt and be on time.
