Profile
of Lindsay Sutton, Intern, Jamie's Dream Team, 12/08
by Graham Thomas
PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern
Lindsay is a Communications major with minors in French and Legal Studies. She chose to also complete the PPW certificate because she feels it will help her get into law school, as it will show that she has finely tuned writing skills. In the fall 2008 term, Lindsay interned at Jamie’s Dream Team, a nonprofit organization that helps make dreams come true for very sick and terminally ill children. Lindsay learned about the internship at a local community festival and was immediately interested when she found out they were in dire need of volunteers to help with writing for the organization.
Jamie’s Dream Team is an extremely flexible and laid back organization, according to Lindsay. Although her hours changed every week, the organization was still quite flexible. Flexibility is certainly something she requires, since she also works full time, takes classes, and has two children of her own. Regardless of how overwhelming her schedule is, Lindsay feels, “If it is important enough to you, you can make it work.”
At the internship, her duties changed frequently depending on the events that were happening in the organization. For the most part, she was responsible for writing many of the press releases that announced upcoming events. Although the writing experience was invaluable, she wishes she could have spent more time with recipients of the donations. Lindsay’s advice to future interns is, “Try to take advantage of every opportunity you have. You never know what kind of door it will open for you.” |
