PPW Intern Profiles

Profile of Drew Snyder, Intern, Congressman Murphy's Office, 12/08
by Graham Thomas

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

With career aspirations of becoming a United States Senator, Drew took a step toward his goal by acquiring an internship at Congressman Tim Murphy’s Washington D.C. office. Drew’s responsibilities at the internship included giving tours to constituents, writing letters to constituents, and drafting memos. Although he was about ten years younger than the majority of the staff, he felt like he fit in well with the group.

The internship also provided Drew with some great opportunities while in D.C. Drew was fortunate enough to attend weekly strategy sessions for the Republican Party, as well as attend briefings and hearings. “The best moment of the internship was when Nancy Pelosi stopped my tour group and talked to us for about a half an hour,” he says. “It was really cool of her to do that.”

Even though Drew spent over $5,000 during his summer on Capitol Hill, and had some significant political differences with the office, he says it was definitely worth it. “I was able to learn and grow in ways that you can’t put a price on,” he explains.

As a senior majoring in English Writing, Drew decided to complete the PPW certificate because it strongly connects his studies at the University of Pittsburgh with his life after graduation. “I like PPW because it actually teaches skills relevant to the working world,” he explains.
