by Shannon Durkin
PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern
Nicky
Pasi is a senior PPW student and intern at the Animal Rescue League.
She had heard good things about the site from previous interns,
so she sent a resume and some writing samples. Her great writing
landed her an interview, which in turn won her the job. The youngest
person at the Animal Rescue League, it took Nicky almost a month
to get comfortable in her position. She wasn’t sure how to
react to the constant joking and teasing from her coworkers, but
once she started returning the jokes she became much more relaxed.
She says, “I think people definitely started to like me more
and see me as a fixture around the office after I loosened up.”
Mark, Nicky’s supervisor and the main office jokester, usually
gives her an assignment each day. She mostly writes press releases
and web content, but she has also written pieces for the newsletter
and even done some photography. Does she ever get bored? “If
I ever feel stuck in the routine, I can just get up and walk a dog
or play with a cat.”
Nicky really enjoys this internship, and would love to continue
working at the Animal Rescue League. She is surprised at how involved
she is in the clinic; she helps to test kittens for feline leukemia
and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), runs blood tests, and helps
sick and abused animals. “Aside from the writing, I am always
happy to see dogs and cats with problems adopted. One lady adopted
an eleven-year-old, three-legged poodle, and I thought that was
the greatest thing ever.”
Nicky’s favorite moment of her internship was when her supervisor
told her that her work was exceptional. He then trusted her with
more tasks, and gave her more freedom on the job. She has developed
a new confidence in her writing, along with a hatred for bad pet
owners. Nicky has also learned a lot about office dynamics, and
feels more comfortable having experience in a real business setting.
“I feel like I can actually say with confidence that I’ll
be an asset to somebody’s organization.”
