Profile of Anna Newborg, Intern, Asbury Place, 4/08
by Graham Thomas

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

Anna is a senior who is working on an English Writing degree and the PPW Certificate. In the spring of 2008, she decided to pursue an internship through the PPW program at Ashbury Heights. Ashbury Heights is an all inclusive residency for the elderly that not only provides housing, but its own community, complete with stores, coordinated activities, a gym, and several dining rooms.

While interning at Ashbury Heights, Anna worked in the Communications Department where she gained valuable skills writing articles for various newsletters and teaching a weekly poetry class. Although she was considerably younger than her co-workers, Anna fit in well and never felt uncomfortable in the environment.

Anna got to work independently for the most part, which she enjoys because she tends to work better this way. While working alone, she always remembered not to alienate herself and ask questions when unsure about something she was writing.

Overall, Anna is pleased with the internship at Ashbury Heights. “I never thought I would gain so much writing experience, and I’m glad I did,” she explains, “I think I have certainly matured as a writer and gained the confidence that I needed when I will be entering the professional world.” The internship certainly helped her gain experience in the “real” working world and will help to open new doors in her bright future.
