Profile of Meredith Mavero, Intern, Larson O'Brien Advertising/PR/Interactive, 8/08
by Graham Thomas

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

Meredith is a Communications major with high degree of interest in writing. She decided to pursue the PPW certificate to better prepare for the business world. For her internship, she worked at Larson O’Brien Advertising/PR/Interactive, a business to business advertising and PR agency, where she primarily wrote press releases while learning all the facets of PR work.

Meredith says her job at Larson/ O’Brien was fairly steady. She explains, “I would work on the press releases given to me, and with any extra time, I would help others with work. I focused most of my attention on both project and product press releases.” Although most of her time was spent writing alone, she really enjoyed collaborating with her supervisor and other people because it gave her the help and social interaction she needed to learn.

The laid back atmosphere of Larson/O’Brien was especially appealing to Meredith and helped her feel welcome. She says, “The people there want you to do well, and they do everything in their power to help you succeed.”

Even though it was incredibly hard to balance work and the internship, she admits it was a great investment. “I beefed up my writing skills and my employment portfolio, and even had some of my press releases published,” she explains. Her advice to future interns is, “Work hard and play hard, embrace the open feel of the office to get some face time with the owners/partners and get their criticisms on your work.”
