of Becca Lehner, Intern, Signature Financial, 12/08
by Graham Thomas
PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern
Becca is a senior majoring in Political Science who interned at Signature Financial Planning through the PPW program. Signature Financial is a privately owned financial planning firm located in Mount Washington that has over 800 clients. Becca obtained the internship through a networking connection who set her up with an interview.
At the internship, Becca was in charge of planning client appreciation events and seminars. For example, she planned a golf outing, three conference calls, two small client dinners, and a large event at the mattress Factory Museum for high-net worth clients. She was solely responsible for these important tasks, and Becca feels that her strong motivation and organization skills helped her accomplish these assignments with high efficiency.
Becca says her favorite moment while working at the internship was, “looking out at the Mattress Factory after I had set up all of the tables, table cloths and centerpieces (and the food was all laid out by the caterer).” She explains: “I realized at that moment that everything turned out exactly as I had imagined it in my head, and I really do have a chance at getting a great job as a corporate event planner one day if I really work at it.”
Becca feels the internship was definitely worth it because of the experience and the new connections that she gained. In fact, she actually gained another internship for the spring 2009 semester because of her work at Signature. Networking, according to Becca, is the most important aspect of working in the real world. She explains, “The real world really is who you know, not what you know.” Like almost every other PPW student, she agrees that earning the PPW certificate is the best decision that she has made during her education at Pitt.
