Despite finishing two majors, in Communications and Political Science, a certificate in Public & Professional Writing (PPW), and preparing for her summer graduation, senior Kisa Kurtz manages to devote two 9-5 days to her Make-A-Wish Foundation internship. Make-A-Wish is a nonprofit organization that grants wishes to children aged two and a half to eighteen who are suffering from life threatening conditions. Kisa, a development intern, spends her days there on a variety of tasks, including writing wish stories, thank you letters, and other writing assignments. She also helps with common office duties such as filling, copying, and mailing.

While looking for an internship, Kisa wanted a site that would allow her to “have the chance to do amazing things for amazing people who deserve it.” She believes that this internship has given her that and more! She has had the opportunity to work in a relaxed and friendly office atmosphere, which she really appreciates. She says that her coworkers, “treat me as a member of their team. They respect my opinion and they are there to offer feedback my writing and other tasks that I complete.” Kisa believes that this internship provides her with great experience that will prove indispensable post-graduation.

The internship has also opened her eyes to the kind of work that she would like to do after graduation. She says, “I always thought that I wanted to work for a nonprofit, and after working at this internship site, I now know that it is what I want to do after graduation. I feel that an internship with a nonprofit organization prepares me for my future plans.”

Kisa also feels that her PPW certificate prepares her for the future, since it is “the most valuable thing on my resume under the education section.” With the certificate’s writing focus and the writing experience obtained while working for Make-A-Wish, Kisa believes that she has “acquired the ability to make words on paper have an impact on others, to be more concise, and write more quickly than I could before.”

Without a bad word to say about her internship experience at Make-A-Wish Foundation, Kisa strongly recommends this internship site to anyone, especially those interested in working in the nonprofit sector.
