Profile of Tanya Joseph, Intern, Hazelwood Initiative, 4/06
by Jamie Cortazzo Sterling

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

Tanya Joseph, a senior Communications major, is currently interning at a nonprofit community-based organization called the Hazelwood Initiative, Inc. This organization is dedicated to the improvement of the Greater Hazelwood Area, a subsection of Pittsburgh. The Hazelwood Initiative allows community members to voice their opinions on the many issues facing the community, including the construction of the Mon-Fayette Expressway and the closing of Burgwin Elementary School, the last school left in the community.

Tanya has her hands full completing many tasks within her 11- to 13-hour work week. She writes articles for the organization’s newsletter and edits and produces the paper layout, which required that she learn to use Acrobat Pagemaker for her internship. She also wrote a fundraising letter, grant proposal, and a procedure manual for the newsletter’s layout.

Tanya has enjoyed working at Hazelwood Initiative Inc. mainly because the people she works with are friendly and offer only constructive criticism to her writing. She also enjoys the fact that she gets to do many different types of workplace writing.

In the future, Tanya would like to receive her master’s degree in Public Relations and work for a nonprofit agency in New York City. This internship has helped her decide that she would definitely be interested in working in the nonprofit sector. The PPW certificate itself has helped Tanya decide “which path to take after graduation, in terms of both career and graduate school.”

Tanya believes that the benefit of doing a PPW internship is becoming a stronger writer: a student gets to experience an actual working environment and use the writing skills previously acquired in that environment. Tanya says, “I only wish I had done a PPW internship sooner. It was a wonderful experience and I hope that I’d enjoy the professional arena as much as I did this internship.”
