Profile of Jennifer Hervol, Intern, Venture Outdoors, 12/06
by Niki Kalemnous

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

Jennifer Hervol, a fifth year senior majoring in Computer Science, has a passion for both writing and computers. With her internship at Venture Outdoors, Jen was able to gain experience in both her interests.

Venture Outdoors aims to create a sense of community and appreciation for the Western Pennsylvania area by getting people to participate in outdoor recreational activities. They also try to educate kids and adults alike about the environment and the Pittsburgh region. Jen explains that this nonprofit needed help with computers, so her time spent there was very much appreciated.

It didn’t take very long for Jen to get into the groove. She explained that with a background in computers, it was very easy for her to learn how to use the Dreamweaver software and create Web-based writing. Jen worked on a variety of projects while at Venture Outdoors. She wrote the e-newsletter, press releases, e-mail blasts, and descriptions of activities. Also, she worked on their website, edited the quarterly newspaper, and created their blog.

Jen said the best moment of her internship was when they asked her to come back next semester. She agreed to work part-time for Venture Outdoors, mostly because she appreciates their mission.

In the future, Jen hopes to obtain a job that allows her to write and work with computers. She says most people who work with computers are stronger mathematically, and with her experiences with the PPW program, she hopes to have an edge.
