Profile of David Hanna, Intern, Law Office of Williams and Reese, 8/08
by Graham Thomas

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

David Hanna is majoring in Chemistry and upon graduation, he plans on attending law school. So, naturally David found and internship with a law firm, The Law Office of Williams and Reese. David, amazingly, found it easy to obtain the internship; he simply called in, set up an interview, gave them his resume and a writing sample, and he had the job.

Although David was by far the youngest person working at the law firm, he seemed to fit in well and enjoyed the casual environment. His main responsibilities included writing motions, applications, and letters directed towards clients, lawyers, and judges. Additionally, he would sometimes answer phones and do some filings as well.

Going into the internship David knew what to expect, however he did encounter some surprises, “Sometimes they would give me work that a lawyer would be doing, and I felt very leery about this because I did not want to screw up anything important,” he explains.

Although David needed help with most of his work in the beginning and it took him a few weeks to get the hang of things, he says now, “I have become much more independent and feel more confident with my writings as well.” Also, the internship gave him an important glimpse into the “real world” and showed him how an office functions. As a future attorney, David affirms, “The writing experience gained through the certificate is invaluable.”
