Profile of Caroline Friedman, Intern, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 4/08
by Graham Thomas

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

Caroline is a senior Business Marketing major and recently interned in the Communications Department at the Main Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She joined the PPW certificate program because she was concerned that there wasn’t enough writing focused classes in the curriculum. She also feels the certificate will greatly compliment her Business degree and help her no matter which direction her career leads.

After interning with the Pittsburgh Steelers the previous semester, Caroline said the transition from interning with a football team to a library was an interesting one. It took her awhile to realize she could actually ask for assignments rather than just be told what to do. She really liked this aspect of working with the library because they were very conscious of the fact that she was a student and never pushed too much work on her.

Most days at the internship were routine and did not change much. A regular day consisted of doing research, writing documents, and occasionally updating media information and planning events. Caroline also wrote two spreads for the annual report, which she felt was a great responsibility because the report goes to all the supporters of the library. “The best moment was when I first saw something that I had written in its published form… I was really proud of the work that I had done,” she explains.

After graduation, Caroline will be working at Burson-Marsteller as a public relations intern, which she hopes will turn into a full time position. She feels that her internships are what helped secure her post graduation position and the work that she did and the experiences she can take from those positions are invaluable. She claims, “I can go into an interview with not only a really impressive portfolio, but with the understanding of how a business works and with the skills that come with being an educated business person.”
