Profile
of Brandon Edmonds, Intern, Steel City Media, 12/06
by Brandon Edmonds
Steel
City Media provided me with a much broader understanding of what
it is to work in radio and do promotions and public relations for
a radio station. The company is fairly large as it owns both WLTJ
92.9 and WRRK 96.9 FM along with the City Paper. The things I learned
while working at the station were very useful in helping me to understand
the type of position I would want in the future.
I know I don't want to work in radio; however, I would love to have
the same kind of work atmosphere that was present at Steel City
Media. The environment there was wonderful. Everyone was friendly
and very laidback and the interns got their own office with a view
over looking the stadiums. It was a wonderful work experience. If
I were more interest in radio I'd jump at the opportunity to work
for a company like Steel City Media. I met a lot of nice people
and plan to continue many of the relationships I made at Steel City
Media.
The responsibilities I was given at Steel City Media were pretty
important. I was responsible for writing prize forms and promotional
request that were read on air. I was also allowed to come up with
advertisements that could be run in the city paper, in addition
to other various writings, like apology letters and event descriptions.
I felt the majority of the work I was doing was meaningful.
The only drawback was that the internship required extra hours outside
of the normal 9 to 5pm timeframe. I had to give up a few Friday
and Saturday nights in order to work remotes around the city.
All tings considered, I appreciate my time at Steel City Media and
feel that it was a very valuable opportunity. I learned many things
about public relations and client interaction first hand which will
be very valuable in any field I wish to pursue. While I am not really
interested in working in radio, many of the thing that I did at
Steel City Media, i.e., interacting with customers and clients,
thinking of creative ways topromote and advertise the stations,
will be necessary tools at any business,Steel City Media provided
