Profile of Shannon Durkin, Intern, PPW Program, 8/06
by Shannon Durkin

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

I am currently an intern for the PPW Program/Writing Center. I am involved in several projects, including developing materials for the website, event planning, and conceptualizing and writing articles for Write Now, the PPW newsletter. I chose to do this internship because I had the option of working from home, a big plus when you have a full time job.

I think I was fairly aggressive to land this internship, which is not typical of me. Jean had sent out an email asking for potential PPW interns, and I immediately responded. I knew that if I was going to do any internship during this program, now was my chance.

I am slightly surprised by the amount of work I have accomplished in a short time. Although I have not written a large number of separate pieces, I have worked a lot behind the scenes. Most of my time has been spent contacting and researching local nonprofit agencies for an online Service Learning guidebook. This guidebook was developed by former PPW student Jen Brown, and will eventually be made available online to all PPW students. I have also learned how to use Adobe InDesign, which will be a valuable asset for future jobs. When I began this internship, I knew that design was my weak area. Although I am far from an expert, I now know enough to navigate my way around a document.

The only bad part of this internship has been feeling a little overwhelmed at times, but that is mostly due to my hectic work/life schedule. The large workload has forced me to become more organized; I am now an expert at making to do lists! I have also improved at multitasking, which I feel is an essential quality in the workplace.

Overall, I am thrilled that I had this opportunity to not only to gain experience, but to become a more well rounded writer and to have a feeling of what it is like to be writing on the job instead of in a classroom.
