Profile of Lauren Bruce, Intern, Project to End Human Trafficking, 4/08
by Graham Thomas

PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern

After spending a summer studying human trafficking in Copenhagen, Denmark and Amsterdam, senior Lauren Bruce decided to take an internship with The Project to End Human Trafficking (PEHT) through the PPW program. Lauren, being extremely self motivated, is majoring in psychology and pursuing certificates in Womens’ Studies and Public and Professional Writing. She feels that earning the PPW certificate will significantly compliment her degree and, “there is no better way to put all my philosophy and feminism into practical use that to write for public issues.”

While interning at PEHT, Lauren was named the “writing coordinator” for the organization. Her main responsibilities were writing pieces for the newsletter, a letter to the editor, loads of research, and helping coordinate events. Lauren also did a lot of writing for the organization’s handbook. Although the internship was closely related to her interests, she wishes the organization was more formal, and had more extensive internal communication. She also wishes she could have worked more with the other interns instead of just getting weekly individual assignments and reporting progress with the director.

She claims the most challenging moment was giving a presentation at a local high school. After being roped in at the last minute, she had to prepare nearly everything, speak over a room of restless high school students, and present without the powerpoint she created. This assignment surely put her patience and adaptability to the test.

Overall, Lauren says the internship was “definitely worth the effort because I’ve had such an intimate look inside the non-profit world…I’m learning the types of things that have made me think I could even start my own non-profit one day.”

Lauren’s passion for human rights will certainly play a key role in her future. Upon graduation, her life’s goals include becoming a writer/philosopher, extensive traveling, and making a difference in our in world by helping to fight for human rights.
