Story by Lindsay Bish
As a senior getting ready to graduate in April, I thought participating
in the PPW internship program would be the perfect way to complete
the certificate and complete my college career. Reflecting on all
that has happened this semester, I know that I made the right choice.
Having the opportunity to get out of the classroom and into the
"real world" is what I found to be the most enjoyable
aspect of having an internship.
I interned for the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs
(GSPIA) under the direction of Jean Hale. Even though I was Jean's
first intern, I still had a positive experience. I plan to attend
law school and some day work for the government. Choosing GSPIA
as my internship site seemed natural.
As my first task, I had to interview various GSPIA alumni in order
to write their story, which was to be published on the internet.
Despite my outgoing personality, everything about the interviewing
process makes me extremely nervous. This internship helped me sharpen
my interviewing skills, which alleviated some of my fear. Both of
the alumni stories are currently published on GSPIA's website. Seeing
your own work published is one of the most rewarding feelings.
The class complemented the internship well. I've learned many things
that no other college course will teach you. Pam has given us advice
on everything from resumes to thank-you letters. I also learned
the importance of having an employment portfolio. If you decide
to create a portfolio, which I highly recommend, you will be among
the mere twenty percent of job candidates that have a portfolio
to show future employers. An employment portfolio can be the reason
why you land the job over the other ten qualified applicants.
I didn't have the chance to work on many projects this semester
because I was the first intern at my site. This shouldn't discourage
you from looking into GSPIA as a possible site. I think Jean now
realizes the value of having a PPW intern on board and the next
interns will be more than satisfied with the experience.
