Creation of Managed Mailing Lists at Pitt

This form has been provided as a convenience to users at the University of Pittsburgh who wish to establish a managed mailing list. Please enter information carefully and check it before submitting the form.

If the information you enter is incomplete, the creation of your mailing list will be delayed until we can contact you. If you do not enter valid electronic mail address in the List Owners field, we will not be able to respond to you and your request will be ignored. If there is any doubt about the authenticity of the creation request, we will try to contact you before processing the request.

Keep in mind that the List Owners bear the responsibility for the content of the mailing list, especially if it is moderated. If you have questions about your liability, you will have to contact the University's legal counsel. We do not monitor content of mailing lists, but we must investigate reported security concerns and copyright violation or other illegal activities, and we will expect your cooperation.

Moderated Lists

To make a mailing list moderated, follow the normal creation instructions here, then when the list has been created, update the list configuration as described in the other documents to make the list moderated. The moderator(s) will be the address(es) listed below as "List Owners". Under Majordomo 1.94.3, there is a configuration option to set the moderation address indepently of the list owner address(es).

List Name

This is the electronic mail address for submissions sent to the mailing list. The name you choose must not include any special characters, and must not already be in use. You should use hyphens ("-") to separate "words" in the address instead of using underscores ("_"), if possible.

List Description

This is the name of the list, along with a few lines of text identifying the purpose of the list.

List Owners

These are the electronic mail addresses of the people who will receive non-delivery reports, subscription acknowledgements and/or approval requests. The primary list owner address(es) must be listed here. Note that you do not have to include all of the list owner addresses here, since having and using the list owner password (below) is enough for many list administration taks.

Only addresses which are affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh may be listed here. Currently, user+@pitt.edu addresses are preferred, although any user@*.pitt.edu address is acceptible.

List Password

This password must be used when managing the list configuration, subscription information and approval. It should be 6-8 characters long and should consist of normal printing characters, but not the '#' character. Please make note of the password before entering it here, because it will not be displayed.

Do not use your Network Authorization password here. This password will be sent in plaintext via email when you interact with Majordomo and could be exposed to the administrators of the list server and possibly to the subscribers of your list if you make a mistake when approving a post. Be prepared to change the list password immediately under such conditions.
