Mailing List Archives at Pitt using Majordomo
All lists on list.pitt.edu can have archives. All -digest lists automatically
have an archive of the digests. We have yet to make a determination of
exactly how much disk space we can devote to any particular list, or what
to do when someone has exceeded that point.
Note: by default, access to archives is allowed to everyone, not
just to the subscribers of your list. See the description below of
the options you can change to alter this behavior.
There is no web form for archive requests at this time. Just request
a archive of your list by sending an email message to Postmaster.
The request must include your preference for daily, monthly or yearly archives.
We are investigating alternatives to Majordomo's simple archiving strategy.
Overview
The archiving that Majordomo provides by default is limited to daily, monthly
or yearly archive files. Each new submission to the list is appended to
the archive file. Users can use the "index
listname" and "get listname
filename" commands to list and retrieve list archives.
List Owner Options for Archives
All of these options are in the list configuration for the list, which
you can use the config/newconfig commands to update. You don't need to
edit any of these unless you wish to change the defaults. If you have a
-digest version of your list, you must edit the options in the config
files for both the lists.
-
get_access
If set to list, then the requestor must be on the mailing list in order
to get files. If set to closed, no one but the list owner can get files.
-
index_access
If set to list, then the requestor must be on the mailing list in order
to get a file index. If set to closed, no one but the list owner can get
a files index.
-
mungedomain
If set to yes, a different method is used to determine a matching address.
When set to yes, addresses of the form user@dom.ain.com are considered
equivalent to addresses of the form user@ain.com. This allows a user to
subscribe to a list using the domain address rather than the address assigned
to a particular machine in the domain. This keyword affects the interpretation
of addresses for subscribe, unsubscribe, and all private options.
Majordomo's developers had some other options in mind, but they do not
work, so don't try them. They are mentioned here only because it is likely
that list owners will see them and want to try to use them. Don't, at least
not at this time...
-
archive_dir
The directory where the mailing list archive is kept. This item does
not currently work. Leave it blank.
