On 12-4-2006, Officer Riggs, a one year old black Labrador Retriever joined the University of Pittsburgh Police Department as a new officer specializing in explosives detection. Officer Riggs and his partner Officer David Nanz, a ten year veteran of the police department, recently graduated from the Von der haus Gill K-9 Academy in Ohio. The training and certification of Officer Riggs has enabled him to detect over 25 explosive odors, enhancing the safety of the campus population. The University of Pittsburgh Police is grateful to the Department of Homeland Security Region 13 Counter Terrorism Task Force, and Allegheny County District Attorney’s office for providing funding for the purchase and training of Officer Riggs.
