New York City Trip
February 28-March 5, 2003

This trip is sponsored by UPJ's Phi Alpha Theta and History Club and is open to any student, faculty member, or staff of the University of Pittsburgh.  History Club Members will be given preference for first registration.  They may pre-Register on Monday, February 3 at 9 am with a non-refundable deposit of $100 (in cash or a check made to cash).  Students in Newman's and Santoro's American Immigration may register as of 6 pm that day.  The trip will be limited to 13 registrants.  Drs. Santoro and Newman will be your hosts.  The total cost of the trip is $200, and includes van transportation to New Jersey, hotel, Empire State Building and museum admission fees.  It does NOT include meals, tickets to shows, New Jersey Rail Transit into the City, or Subway/bus fares in Manhattan.  I would budget $20 per day for food, $50-75 total for entertainment, $40 total for NJT, and $12 total for subway/bus.  We will grab breakfast in the morning and not stop to eat again until dinner.  Pack snack foods in a backpack.

Friday, February 28
Gather in the Krebs parking lot at 2:45 pm.  Depart UPJ at 3 pm.  Dine on fast food on the way to our hotel.  Arrive at the South Plainfield, New Jersey Holiday Inn by 10pm.

Saturday, March 1
Gather in the Lobby at 7:30, depart for New Jersey Transit train to Manhattan, stop for coffee/breakfast along the way.  Arrive at Penn Station by 9am, walk east on 34th street stopping at Macy's Dept. Store.  Continue to the Empire State Building to see the whole city.  Walk north up 5th Avenue and stop for lunch.  Bus north to visit Sak's and St. Patrick's Cathedral.  Bus north to visit FAO Schwarz.  Bus North to 82nd street to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Subway south back to 42nd, and walk west to Times Square...hang out and take it all in.  Take 7th avenue south back to Penn Station, head back to Jersey.  Crash.

Sunday, March 2
Gather in the lobby at 8:30am, depart for Sherbin's Diner for breakfast.  Drive to Liberty State Park and take the ferry to Ellis Island.  After touring the facility and its museum, take the Ferry to Liberty Island to see the Statue up close.  Ferry back to Jersey, and head back to South Plainfield for a buffet dinner.  After dinner, its "An Evening with Mike and Rose," as we visit Dr. Santoro's parents at his childhood home.  Mike and Rose Santoro will regale us with their parents' stories of immigration to America from Italy in the early twentieth century.

Monday, March 3
Gather in the lobby at 6:30 am, depart for NJT train grabbing coffee and breakfast on the way.  Train to Penn Station, subway to Rockefeller Plaza to go to the Today Show so that Dr. Santoro can pay homage to Katie's calves.  Thus priming Dr. Santoro, we'll subway back south to 22nd street to the New York City Museum of Sex.  In the afternoon we'll catch a Broadway matinee and spend the evening on the town.

Tuesday, March 4
Gather in the lobby at 8 am, depart for NJT Train grabbing coffee and breakfast on the way.  Train to Penn Station and subway south to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.  Bus to the New York Fire Museum and then bus to the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, the Asch building.  We'll see the arch at Washington Square there too.  After our tour we'll stroll through China town and Little Italy to the South Street Seaport, and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.  We'll visit the NYSE on Wall Street and pass by Ground Zero.  Perhaps we'll hit a comedy club tonight, maybe The Upright Citizens Brigade.

Wednesday, March 5
Gather in the lobby one last time at 9 am.  Head out for breakfast, and make our way back to UPJ by 4 pm.
