The first International Women's Day was held on March 8, 1911 but it was not until 1981 that Rep. Barbara Mikulski and Sen. Orrin Hatch introduced a joint resolution for the first National Women's History Week.  In 1986 the National Women's History Project helped expand the celebration to the entire month of March.

Most resources on "women" or "women's history" in the Millstein Library will be found in the collection under the Library of Congress call numbers HQ1101-HQ2030.9 (Sociology).  Subject-related works such as "women artists" will be found in the art section (N); "women athletes" will be found in the sports section (GV); etc.

Pittcat+ uses a keyword search to find appropriate materials.  You can also use Library of Congress Subject Headings or browse the "discovery cloud" in Pittcat+ to find better terms. For example, "women" is a very broad term.  If you are looking for items on "mothers" search under the narrower term "mothers," NOT "women."  Other examples of narrower terms might include housewives, sisters, daughters, abused women, etc.   You can also search for information about "women" using phrases such as women and war, women engineers, women journalists, or women biography. The best way to search  Pittcat+ for Greensburg materials is to use the drop down menu for location on the right side of the screen.
