Brief Biography of Tobin Marks, Northwestern University
Tobin J. Marks was born on November 25th, 1944 in Washington, D.C.
He received a B.S. degree from the University of Maryland in 1966
and, as an NSF Predoctoral Fellow, completed his Ph.D. studies at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970. Dr. Marks then
joined the faculty at Northwestern University, where he is now the
Charles S. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry and Professor
of Materials Science and Engineering.
During his tenure at Northwestern University, Dr. Marks has established
himself as a world leader in inorganic, organometallic, and materials
science chemistry. His wide ranging research interests include transition
metal and f-element organometallic chemistry, catalysis, vibrational
spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, synthetic facsimiles of
metalloprotein active sites, carcinostatic metal complexes, solid
state chemistry, isotope separation, macrocycle coordination chemistry,
laser-induced chemistry, and metal-organic vapor deposition.
The importance of Dr. Marks' scientific contributions can be measured
by the honors bestowed upon him. Among his major awards are the
Fresenius Pure and Applied Chemistry Award of Phi Lambda Upsilon,
Sobral Medalist of the Portuguese Chemical Society, the ACS Arthur
K. Doolittle Award in Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering,
the ACS Award in Organometallic Chemistry, and the ACS Award in
Inorganic Chemistry. Dr. Marks is a member of the U.S. National
Academy of Sciences and a fellow of both the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement
of Science. Dr. Marks has served the profession in a number of capacities:
as the 1997 Chairman of the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry;
as a member of the editorial and advisory boards of many journals
including Associate Editor of Organometallics; and as an
organizer of numerous national and international symposia and workshops.
