Brief Biography of Fred Lytle, Purdue University
Fred E. Lytle received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Juniata
College in 1964 and earned his Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry
at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968. He joined
the faculty at Purdue University that same year, being promoted
to Associate Professor in 1974 and Professor in 1979. He was the
Head of the Analytical Division at Purdue from 1979 to 1984.
His research interests include the theory and application if absorption,
fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy; time resolved fluorescence
and Raman spectroscopy; and two-photon spectroscopy. In 1982, he
spent a sabbatical leave studying two-photon photonionization/mass
spectrometry at the Center for Analytical Chemistry, National Bureau
of Standards, Washington D.C.
During his tenure at Purdue he has been awarded the Merck Company
Faculty Development Award; voted the Outstanding Teacher in the
School of Science for 1979; and received the Amoco Undergraduate
Teaching Award in 1985. In 1986 he was the recipient of the American
Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical
Instrumentation sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company. In 1988 he
will be the recipient of the American Chemical Society Award in
Analytical Chemistry sponsored by Fisher Scientific Company.
He is currently serving a three year term on the National Bureau
of Standards Panel for Analytical Chemistry and was a member of
the National Science Foundation Chemistry Advisory Board from 1982
to 1985. He is an associate editor of Analytical Chemistry; and
associate editor of Applied Spectroscopy; a member if the editorial
board of Analytica Chimica Acta a member of the American Chemical
Society, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, and the Optical Society
of America.
