Grady's Story
Grady arrived 12/12/97 weighing 8 lbs and measuring 20 inches in length.
He was born without a heartbeat due to a cord compression during delivery
and because of the resulting oxygen deprivation he suffered extensive brain
damage and spent the first 5.5 weeks of his life in the hospital. So far
the consequences of the brain damage are developmental delays (commonly
known as cerebral palsey),
infantile spasm seizures, cortical visual impairment, reflux
and eating difficulties . The good news is that he is alert and curious.Grady
has passed all the hearing tests that I know about and seems to really
like sounds. Now that his vision is working better he also likes to watch
the activity around him. He now smiles at funny sounds, whistling, harmonicas,
repetitive games, kisses and sometimes at friends. He has at times been
fairly vocal, kicks his legs when excited and cries quite loudly when unhappy
or uncomfortable. He is much better at controlling his head now so he likes
to sit when well supported and look around. He can also control his arms
a bit more but it is still difficult for him. He can activate his mobile
and an electric fan by pressing a big plate switch.
