Data Network Backbone |
![]() |
The University of Pittsburgh Network, PittNet, exists to provide both local and global network connectivity for University students, faculty, and staff. The network operates over an FDDI/FastEthernet backbone which joins hundreds of local ethernets into a large, geographically distributed network.
There are over 17,500 network ports in the Oakland, Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville campuses. In addition, 800 dialup lines exist to handle the more than six thousand remote connections per day. We jointly own and operate an Internet connection with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, Penn State and Carnegie-Mellon University.
The following drawings illustrate the layout of PittNet's backbone. The
first figure shows the network equipment and is color coded with the
second figure to show where the buildings on campus attach to the PittNet
backbone. For illustration #2, please
