Paris Reunion Band Spreads the Word to Dubai

Pitt’s Jazz Seminar Outreach Program recently extended as far as Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, as Pitt Jazz Studies Director Nathan Davis (far right) gathered with the Paris Reunion Band in December for JAZZ@Dubai Media City.

The event, of which Davis was musical director, involved a live performance, individual lectures, and workshops at American University in Dubai, and a University-sponsored talent search. The Paris Reunion Band, shown at right, was cofounded in 1984 by Davis and legendary jazz drummer Kenny Clarke.

After Clarke’s sudden death in 1985, band members continued to perform and record around the globe, as a tribute to Clarke and the jazz scene that flourished in Paris in the 1950s and ’60s.

The Dubai event was sponsored by Cultural Engineering Dubai. Its chair, Damien Pwono, received the Ph.D. degree in ethnomusicology at Pitt in 1992 and is a former student of Davis’. While there, Davis also was interviewed for an article that appeared in The Buzz, a new biweekly English language newspaper published in Dubai.
