Under the leadership of internationally
acclaimed musician and educator Dr.
Nathan Davis, the University of Pittsburgh has
become recognized as one of the premier Jazz
programs in the country. Pitt has become synonymous
with Jazz, from the renowned annual Jazz
Seminar and Concert, which showcases the
world's foremost jazz performers in a week-long
series of free educational seminars culminating in
an all-star concert, to the Pitt
Jazz Ensemble, which is a proving ground for
the next generation of Jazz giants. The Pitt Jazz
Ensemble has performed around the globe, garnering
critical praise. Members also act as ambassadors of
good will. Band alumnus include the likes of
pianist Geri Allen and rising star Dwayne
Dolphin.
Pitt also is home to the University
of Pittsburgh-Sonny Rollins International Jazz
Archives. The archives house important original
manuscripts, recordings and related memorabilia.
Items donated by the legends of Jazz are on display
for the enjoyment of the general public. The
collection includes Sonny Rollins' saxophone, Clark
Terry's trumpet mouthpiece, Donald Byrd's trumpet,
Grover Washington Jr's saxophone and an original
painting by Miles Davis.
The Jazz Archives also include The International
Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame, which each year
inducts a new Jazz great into the Academy.
Inductees are immortalized in Bronze plaques
displayed in a special viewing gallery surrounding
the Archives display area in the historic William
Pitt Union.
The William R. Robinson
Recording Studio is the latest addition to the
Pitt Jazz family. This state-of-the-art 32 track
digital recording facility is both studio and
classroom, offering students hands on experience in
the latest recording techniques and technology. If you need
