In 1977, the International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame, at the University of Pittsburgh, was created for the purpose of recognizing and honoring jazz musicians who have made exceptional contributions to the art. It was the first such hall of fame to be created by a major American university.

The dedication of the permanent home of the International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame took place on November 7, 1984. It is located in the William Pitt Union on the University's Oakland campus.

The Academy inducts new honorees each year. Inductees are selected by a worldwide voting committee of jazz critics, writers, composers, and musicians who have for years been active forces in the field of jazz.
