Research Tools

Each regional field (Europe, United States, Asia, Latin America) will determine the number and kind of languages and research tools that are required for the MA and the PhD degrees. These research tools must be fulfilled, by one of the following means, before the MA Examination or the PhD Comprehensive Examination may be held. Students whose native language is other than English may be certified in that language if they intend to use it for their research.

Candidates may fulfill the research tool requirement by: (a) having satisfied this requirement when acquiring the MA degree; (b) by scoring above the 50th percentile in the Princeton Educational Testing Service Examination (applicable to French, German, Russian, or Spanish); (c) by presenting a research paper that demonstrates ability to read and comprehend historical literature in the foreign language, to the satisfaction of two faculty members; or (d) by passing a departmental language examination, two hours in length, that demonstrates the student’s ability to translate into English passages in a foreign-language text selected and graded by two faculty examiners. The first hour shall consist of close translation of a passage with the aid of a dictionary. The second hour shall consist of a summary of passages with the aid of a dictionary.

For a list of faculty competent to examine in a given language, students should consult the graduate director and/or graduate secretary.
