“A Period of Turmoil” – Pittsburgh’s April 1968 Riots and their Aftermath
This paper examines the aftermath of the riots that broke out in Pittsburgh after Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. Drawing upon archival sources, press accounts, and oral history interviews, the paper sets forth economic, social, and political impacts in the years immediately following the riots. Despite a moment of possibility for the city to chart a new path, though, existing power structures remained basically the same.
