Fellowships & Funding

The department offers incoming doctoral students five years of financial support (consisting of an annual stipend, remission of tuition fees, and health insurance). Typically first-, third-, and fifth-year graduate students are supported by fellowships (with no teaching responsibilities) while second- and fourth-year students are appointed as teaching assistants in the fall and spring semesters.

The department is often able to offer teaching support to students beyond their fifth year.

Students are encouraged to apply for any external funding for which they might be eligible. In recent years, we have had a number of students who have won national and international fellowships, including the national Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies, National Science Foundation Fellowships, Jacob Javits Fellowships, and Spencer Foundation Fellowships.  International students have been funded by Fulbright Fellowships, and various national fellowships from their home countries, such as the Canadian Social Sciences Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Fellowship and the German DAAD Fellowship.
