Application Instructions
Graduate student applications to the Department of Philosophy must be submitted by:
January 10, 2007
The University of Pittsburgh and the Department of Philosophy require students to apply online for the PhD program. However, the department requires additional application materials that must be mailed.

Statement of Purpose |
State your reasons for wanting to undertake graduate study in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. You may submit your statement of purpose electronically, in the additional information section of the online admissions application, or you can mail it to the department. |

Official GRE General Aptitude Test Scores |
Scores should be no more than two years old. The GRE should be taken soon enough for results to reach the philosophy department before January 10 The University of Pittsburgh's institution code is 2927, and the philosophy department code is 2801. |
Three Letters of Recommendation |
Referees may submit their recommendations either electronically (instructions are included with the online application ), or by mail to the department. |
Writing Sample |
A sample of your philosophical writing (an essay of about 20 or 25 pages) is required. Papers submitted will not be returned. Your name should be clearly indicated on the first page. Papers should be mailed to the department. |
Application Fee |
Fifty dollars ($50 U.S.) payment can be made electronically along with the online application, or by mailing a check to the department. Checks should be made payable to the "University of Pittsburgh" and mailed with a copy of the payment voucher from the electronic application (if you are completing that application; otherwise, include the check with your application package when you mail it to the department). The University of Pittsburgh waives the application fee for McNair Scholars. If you are a McNair Scholar, and are completing the online application, choose the payment option to "mail your check." Send a printed copy of your payment voucher to the department with "McNair Scholar" written on the voucher. Do not send a check. |
