Hi, my name is Patrick Zarnas, and I am a mechanical engineering major at the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering. I am originally from the Lehigh Valley area, a place I still call home, and I grew up just outside of Allentown, PA. Prior to coming to the University of Pittsburgh, I was educated through the Parkland School District all the way from kindergarten through the 12th grade.
It was in high school that I began to truly recognize my natural talent in the areas of mathematics and science, and I soon developed an affinity for these subjects as well. In addition to this talent, I also enjoy the sense of accomplishment associated with solving problems and seeing my work materialize into a finished product. Given these factors, it was an obvious decision for me to study engineering. My selection of mechanical engineering comes specifically from a fascination with machinery and automobiles in particular.
Academics aside, I enjoy a few hobbies outside of my work at school. Not surprisingly, considering my choice of mechanical engineering and the reason for it, I love working on and driving my car. It is not uncommon for me to take a relaxing cruise just to relieve stress. Anyone who knows me would also add that I enjoy a good video game as well - probably too much, in fact. In high school, I threw the javelin all four years and qualified for various invitational meets, though I do not seek to continue my involvement with track & field in college. I am, however, getting involved with the university's Formula SAE team, which designs and builds an open wheel race car from the ground up every year for a competition in Detroit with schools from around the world.
As for my future, I would love to one day have a job in the automotive industry, but I have realistic expectations and look forward to any job opportunities that come my way after my time here at Pitt.
