Math 2371 (Matrices and Linear Operators II)
Spring 2018

Instructor: Reza Pakzad Email: pakzad At-Sign pitt Dot edu

Lectures: MWF 10:00AM-10:50AM at Thackeray Hall 321

Recitation: Th 10:00AM-10:50AM at Bendum G24, Recitation Instructor: Priyadip Mondal.

Office hours: (Subject to Change) Tu at 3:30PM-4:30PM, or by email appointment, held at Thackeray Hall 610.

Content and Prerequisites: This course is a continuation of MATH 2370. Topics include canonical forms, vector space decomposition, inner products, spectral theory, matrix inequalities and decompostions.

Textbooks: The required textbooks are Linear Algebra (2nd Edition), K. Hoffman and R. Kunze and Linear Algebra and Its Applications, P. D. Lax .

Grading: The final grade will be based on homework assignments (20%), midterm (30%), the final exam (50%). A higher score on the final exam will erase a lower midterm score, hence your final grade will be calculated as follows:

Grade = (2H + 3max(M,F) + 5F)/10

where H is the homework grade, M is the midterm grade, and F is the final exam grade, all out of 100.

Homework: The homeworks will appear here (the link) each Wednesday and will be collected on next Wednesday in class. Solving exercises are very important as without practice any success in exams based on mere theoretical knowledge is very unlikely.

Calendar and Exam Date:

Monday Jan 8: First Class
Monday Jan 15: Martin Luthr King's day - no classes
Friday March 2: Midterm Exam
Monday March 4-11: Spring Break - no classes
Friday April 27: Last Class

Midterm: It will be held on Friday March 2nd in class.

Midterm Policy: There will be no make up midterm exam. If you miss the midterm exam for a *documented* serious medical reason or similar tragedy, your grade on it will be prorated on your other exam and homework grade. No Incompletes will be accorded except in extreme circumstances. As for auditing the course, you need to talk with me about it at the latest by the end of September.

Final exam: The date, time and place will be announced here.

New Announcements: Look for occasional updates or extra resources here.
