Content and Prerequisites:
This course is an introduction to Linear transformations of finite dimensional vector spaces. The syllabus include bases and dimension,
matrix representation, linear functionals, duality, canonical forms, vector space decomposition, inner products and spectral theory.
Textbook: The required textbook is Linear Algebra (2nd Edition), K. Hoffman and R. Kunze .
The following textbook is recommended as a secondary source: Linear Algebra and Its Applications, P. D. Lax .
Grading: The final grade will be based on homework assignments (20%), midterm I (20%), midterm II (20%), and the final exam (40%). A higher score on the final exam will erase any lower midterm score, hence your final grade will be calculated as follows:
Midterm 1 cut-off: The first three chapters of the textbook.
Midterm II cutoff: Chapters 1-5 except for sections 5.5, 5.6 and 5.7 and sections 6.1-6.3 of the textbook.
Midterm Policy: There will be no make up midterm exam. If you miss
the midterm exam for a *documented* serious medical reason or similar tragedy,
your grade on it will be prorated on your other exam and homework grade. No Incompletes
will be accorded except in extreme circumstances. As for auditing
the course, you need to talk with me about it at the latest by the end of September.
