CE 1105     Test #1  February 25, 1999

1. 15 points -- Define the following terms (a definition should be no longer
than ten or twelve words):

 a) Calcareous
 b) Metamorphic
 c) Sand
 d) Oven dry
 e) Hygroscopic

2) 15 points --To counteract each of the following problems, select the
appropriate concrete admixture type, the desired effect,  and identify one
specific material of each type :

  Problem
 a) The concrete is too permeable
 b) The concrete is setting up too fast
 c) The contractor is having difficulty pumping the concrete mix
 d) The concrete is not sufficiently workable for efficient    placement
 e) To achieve high strength the concrete water demand must   be reduced 15%

3. 20 points -- Identify the appropriate concrete type for each of the
following applications:

 A) Lower stories of a high rise building
 B) Airport Runway with drainage runoff problems
 C) Modular construction in which forms are reused as soon as possible
 D) Top floors of a high rise building
 E) Acoustic shielding in a hospital

For each answer, identify the property of the concrete that makes it
appropriate and the way the property is obtained in the concrete. For
example, if your answer were "Porous Concrete", the property would be "high
permeability" and the way it is obtained would be "elimination of fine
aggregate and use of a minimum amount of cement"

4. 20 points -- Using Table 7-6 in the PCA Manual find the requirements for
water (per cubic yard of concrete) for the following applications:

Aggregate Size     Slump      Air entrained?     Aggregate Type

 A)   1 1/2"             1-2                 Yes              Gravel with some crushed stone
 B)   1"                   3-4                   No              Subangular
 C)   3/4"                6-7                  Yes              Gravel with some crushed ston
 D)   1/2"               3-4                    Yes              Crushed stone
 E)   1 1/2"             1-2                   Yes              Rounded gravel

5. (10 points) The design of a Portland Cement Concrete mix to achieve a
specified strength in a specified environment and application depends upon a
number of factors. Using the logic of the absolute volume (eleven step
method) please answer this question. Does the fineness modulus of the fine
aggregate affect the amount of fine aggregate required? If so, how does it
influence the amount of fine aggregate required?

. 20 points -- Calculate the Fineness Modulus for the following sieve
analysis. Does the sieve analysis conform to the ASTM C 33 requirements?

 Sieve size   Cumulative % passing

  #4                    100
  #8                      85
  #16                    75
  #30                    55
  #50                    25
  #100                  10
  Pan                      0
