GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course ENGR 0131, Statics (Engineering Mechanics)

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH
School of Engineering
Civil and Environmental Engineering Department

Room BEH 921 Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
9:00 AM - 9:50 AM

Voluntary Recitation -- To be scheduled

Lectures

The course will consist of three fifty minute lectures each week, with the lecture time divided between presentation of theory and working of example problems. The Schedule  tabulates reading and homework assignments. A (voluntary) fifty minute recitation will meet once a week at a time and place to be selected that is suitable for the students interested in supplemental help.

It is a basic Statics course whose major topics include Force Systems and Resultants, Equilibrium, Structures, Centroids, Distributed Forces, Friction, Virtual Work and Potential Energy, and Moment of Inertia.

Students are responsible for knowing the material covered in the lectures and for completing the homework assignments. Students may confer with other students or the instructor regarding homework assignments, but must complete assignments individually. The class schedule shows due dates for homework assignments. They will be accepted before Noon of the scheduled date without penalty. Late homework will be accepted before Noon of the following Monday with a 20% penalty.
