Institution versus Project Number


Institution Numbers:

  • the seven-digit number assigned to any sponsored project application before the application is awarded or to any nonfinancial contract signed after January 1, 2007

  • will remain the same throughout a given funding cycle of a sponsored project or the life of a nonfinancial contract; a new institution number will be issued at the time a competive renewal application is submitted

  • also referred to as I number or I#

  • assigned by the Office of Research

Project Numbers:


Institution Number
and Project Number will co-exist:

  • an award/fully executed agreement/add-on is received in the Office of Research, processed, and sent to Research/Cost Accounting for project number assignment. Research/Cost Accounting will track the project by the Project Number.

  • the Office of Research will continue to track an award/fully executed agreement by the Institution Number.


How to Reference Documents

  • once a Project Number is assigned, reference the Institution Number as well as the Project Number

  • for resubmissions (previous submitted applications), reference the original Institution Number on the 136 form(s) (formerly referred to as stock(s) form(s))

  • for add-ons, continuations, and revisions, reference the Institution Number as well as the Project Number where indicated on the 136-1 form (formerly referred to as stock form)

  • for nonfinancial contracts like Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Confidentiality/Non-Disclosure Agreements ( CDAs/NDAs), etc. signed after January 1, 2007, reference the Institution Number
