Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC)
The mission of the Navy ROTC is to develop the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty
and to commission Navy and Marine Corps officers who readily assume the highest
responsibilities of command, citizenship and government. The NROTC unit is hosted by Carnegie
Mellon University (CMU), within walking distance of the University of Pittsburgh, and is
comprised of students from CMU, Pitt as well as Duquesne University who join through mutual
enrollment agreements.
Student midshipmen consistently demonstrate that they are some of the most ambitious
students on campus. They hold positions of leadership in many campus organizations,
fraternities/sororities, and varsity sports. The unit competes in nearly every intramural
sport offered and sends teams to compete against other ROTC units in drill, basketball, and track and field.
Course work focuses upon leadership and character development, military knowledge, and teamwork expected of professional
naval officers. Specific naval science courses include: Introduction to Naval Science, Leadership and Management,
Navigation, Engineering, Amphibious Warfare, Naval Operations and Seamanship, and Leadership and Ethics.
Qualified students may be eligible for scholarships that cover full tuition, all fees,
$750 per year for books and provides a monthly stipend of $250-$400. Special scholarships for
NROTC students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) are also available.
Graduates of NROTC receive commissions as officers in the Navy, the Marine Corps, or the Navy Nurse Corps. Most Navy
officers serve as line officers in aviation, submarine, or surface warfare. All are committed to a minimum of four years of
active duty service.
"The ROTC program really taught me leadership and disciplinehow to strike a strong
balance between the normal life of a student and the responsibilities and duties of a soldier.
I never, ever thought I would actually succeed in the military. Not as an Infantry Officer,
especially not in the Airborne, and most definitely not as a Ranger. But I did all three,
and finished my commission with the rank of Captain after the Army gave me the skills,
confidence and strength to take on the world on my own terms. If someone told at me at age 18
that I could do all that, graduate on time with good grades and have a social life, I would've
said they were crazy."
