Pitt's Program . . .
The University of Pittsburgh's
pharmacy program is a six-year,
Doctor of Pharmacy degree program.
Pharmacy students start in the School of Arts and Sciences
(A&S) taking two years of specific prerequisite classes,
in preparation for the four-year, professional, doctoral program.
Unlike the pre-professional courses required by many Pharm.D
programs, your A&S classes can also be used to earn a
bachelor's degree in any liberal arts major. They include:

| TOTAL |

*At least six credits must be in the humanities and six credits in the social sciences. A course in Public Speaking
is recommended.
The professional curriculum of the Doctor of Pharmacy program is eight terms in length and provides
students with the scientific, administrative and clinical knowledge and skills necessary to provide pharmaceutical care.
The program emphasizes lifelong learning skills and student-centered learning. Some of the topics students focus on
during the program include fundamental principles of drug action and physiology, the physiological aspects of health
care and pharmacy, and management principles.
Getting In . . .
There are two ways to enter the School of Pharmacy. Conditional admission is offered to a select group of
outstanding high school students each year. These students will be given priority status at the junior year level for
admission to the Pharm.D program. They will be required to fulfill certain prerequisite class requirements and maintain
a minimum grade point average. Competitive admission at the junior year level is also available. Approximately
half the pharmacy class is made up of students who compete for admission without the conditional admission offer.
Due to the limited number of conditional admission seats (about 100), we suggest that you apply as early as possible.
Admission is on a rolling basis and seats fill up quickly.
Connections . . .
The School of Pharmacy is strategically located adjacent to the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, an internationally
renowned academic medical center. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is affiliated with the University's
Schools of the Health Professions and provides the region's largest and finest network of tertiary, specialty and
community hospitals. Collectively, these facilities provide one of the nation's greatest, most
complete health centers for teaching, patient care, and research
in the health sciences. Pharmacy students do not have to go
far to get real volunteer and work experience. University
of Pittsburgh Medical Center not only provides clinical training
sites for pharmacy students during the school year, but also
provides opportunities for summer internships.
When You Graduate . . .
Students graduate from the School of Pharmacy with a Pharm.D degree, the highest degree offered in the field. Pitt's
graduates historically do very well on the state licensing boards. Each December, 75-100 recruiters from all over the
country come to campus looking for qualified graduates. Because of the top quality of our program and its graduates,
Pitt's School of Pharmacy has almost a 100% graduate placement.
The Honors College
Interested students can complete their pre-professional coursework in the University Honors College. UHC courses are
not intended to be more advanced than regularly offered courses. However, they are designed to be more challenging and
give you a more in-depth perspective on the subject matter. UHC courses are ideal for students planning on continuing
in a professional program such as pharmacy.
