NURSING: A CAREER FOR A LIFETIME

21st century nursing is offering more exciting opportunities than ever before. With a nation-wide shortage of RNs, a rapidly growing elderly population, and breakthrough technological advances, there is a greater demand for nurses with specialized skills.

Today, nurses are responsible for:

  • Providing care and comfort to patients.
  • Making decisions based on data from lab tests and monitoring technology.
  • Following response to therapy and symptom relief.
  • Collaborating with other members of the health care team in the management of mental health problems and rehabilitation following injury or illness.
  • Teaching patients and families self-care and wellness maintenance.

Each day, nurses are finding many new doors opening for them. In addition to taking on greater responsibilities in hospital environments, nurses are also finding more alternatives in non-traditional areas, including community-based care, preventive health education, research, nursing education, health care administration, and informatics. It's little wonder, that nursing is the nation's largest health care profession.

Across the country and around the world, Pitt's graduates are on the cutting-edge of 21st century nursing. Our academic and clinical programs anticipate and reflect tomorrow's health care advances - giving each of our graduates a decided edge, no matter what their dreams may be.
