Dr. Miller earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the
University of Pennsylvania and has a Master's degree in Nursing
as Medical-Surgical Nurse Clinician (Burns) from Vanderbilt University.
He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army. He served
in the United States Army Nurse Corps from 1979 until 2002. He
was stationed in several locations throughout the United States
and abroad. He was deployed during Desert Storm in 1991. His last
assignment was to serve as the Chief Nursing Officer at the United
States Army Institute of Surgical Research (The Army Burn Center)
at FT Sam Houston, TX.
Dr Miller joined the University of Pittsburgh School Of Nursing
in 2005. He is teaching Fundamentals of Professional Nursing (NUR1282)
in the accelerated 2nd Degree BSN Program. He also serves as an
instructor in Nursing Management of the Adult with Acute/Chronic
Health Care Problems (NUR 1282) and Transition into Professional
Nursing Practice (NUR 1133). In addition to his teaching, he is
project director for Dr. Leslie Hoffman’s research “Improving
Outcomes in Mechanically Ventilated Patients” funded by the
National Institute of Nursing Research.
His professional affiliations include membership in Sigma Theta
Tau, The American Association of Critical-care Nurses and the The
American Burn Association.
