Teaching:
I am a member of the Graduate Faculty, University of Pittsburgh,
Coordinator of the Adolescent Scholarship Group in the School of
Nursing, and Associate Director of the Research Dissemination Core
of the School's NIH/NINR funded Center for Research in Chronic Disorders.
I have been teaching nursing research, guiding doctoral dissertation
research, and conducting my own program of research since 1994.
Research:
My area of research is adolescent pubertal development and early
sexual behavior, especially among African American girls between
the ages of 9-14 years. My funded research consists of a two Central
Research Faculty Development awards examining pubertal development
and sexual behavior in preadolescent AA girls, and a pilot health
promotion intervention for upper elementary school girls. I have
received federal funding from NIH/NINR for a K01 award, Models of
Early Teen Pregnancy, and an R01 award from NIH/NICHD for the study,
A Randomized Controlled Trial of the NIA Intervention.
Service:
I am a 2001 recipient of the Chancellor's Distinguished Public Service
Award, and currently, serve as a member of the University Senate's
Anti-Discrimination Committee. I serve the community as the leader
of the NIA Girls' Self-Development Group in the Hill District, and
other after school sites in Homewood, Braddock, and Oakland. I was
recently appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on the National
Child Study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human
Development.
