RESEARCH:
My research interests are in the field of molecular genetics.
I have a fully equipped molecular genetics laboratory located within
the School of Nursing and my lab is involved with several research
projects. My current research involves mitochondrial genetics of
recovery following brain injury, the genetics of aging using lens
transparency as a biomarker, candidate gene analysis for age-related
macular degeneration, and the role of calcium regulating genes
in Alzheimer disease.
TEACHING:
: I am responsible for the "Introduction
to Genetics and Molecular Therapeutics" course (NUR2680).
This course is cross-listed with "Human Genetics" (HUGEN2017)
that is taken as an elective course by students within the Schools
of the Health Sciences. I'm also a member on several doctoral dissertation
committees for students who wish to have a genetics-based component
as part of their pre-doctoral work.
SERVICE:
I am a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University
of Pittsburgh and represent the School of Nursing on the University
Chemical Hygiene and Biohazard Committees. I'm also a member
of the MSN and PhD councils within the School of Nursing as well
as a member of the PhD curriculum committee. Externally, I am
a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the Association
for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the International Society of
Nurses in Genetics. BACKGROUND:
