Nursing Program at University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (UPJ)

The University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (UPJ) offers an RN-BSN completion program in conjunction with the School of Nursing. A purpose of this program at UPJ is to allow RN students to complete the BSN degree without the need for travel to Pittsburgh. Part-time and full-time study is available. A school nurse certificate program is available for RN's enrolled in the RN-BSN program and for RN's who already have an earned BSN degree.

Admission criteria for RN-BSN students are:

  • Completion of an associate degree or a hospital-based nursing program
  • A QPA of 3.0 or above for the 50 prerequisite college credits (25 designated credits and 25 elective credits)
  • Current RN license
  • Current CPR certification
  • Up-to-date health exam
  • Satisfactory completion of four designated Excelsior Challenge Examinations.
In lieu of taking these four Excelsior Challenge examinations, students will be advanced 40 credits if one of the the following conditions is met:
  • Graduate of an NLN accredited school of nursing within the past three years
  • Graduate of an NLN accredited school of nursing more than three years ago with 1,000 hours of documented clinical practice in the most recent three years.

Applicants with less than the 50 prerequisite credits may take courses at UPJ by being admitted through the Admissions Office, 157 Blackington Hall, (814) 269-7050.

Individualized RN-BSN Student Course Plans are prepared upon request and submission of college transcripts. For additional information and applications, call (814) 269-2995 or fax inquiries to
