Nick Stamatakis

My name is Nick Stamatakis, and I am a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, I am enrolled in both the School of Arts and Sciences and the Swanson School of Engineering, as I plan to major in both Music and Industrial Engineering. Both majors are reflective of my personal interests. In high school, I was captain of the Science Olympiad team, Vice-President of NHS, and President of Mock Trial, reflecting my academic and scientific interests. However, I was also involved heavily in music, playing in the Jazz Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, and Chorus--all while privately studying piano. With these varying interests, I decided I could not let go of either passion, and, like many scientists and engineerers before me, decided to continue pursueing both fields at a collegiete level.

I chose the University of Pittsburgh because recieving a dual-degree will not be as demanding here as it can be at other schools. Also, I am from Robinson Township, 15 minutes west of Pittsburgh, and the closeness to home is appealing. My Industrial Engineering degree will set me up for many employment oppourtunites that will be rewarding both monetarily and mentally, and my music degree will open the door for music oppourtunites that will further enrich my life.

Our project is to complete an inventory for the Western Pennsylvania School of the Blind and create an electronic database that will be functional and useful to the employees of the school. Currently, equipment is scattered throughout many rooms, and employees waste much time looking for disability equipment. Ideally, our finished project, which is being completed in conjuction with group 6, will supply the school with a system that will reduce wasted time and increase the overall effectivness of the staff.
