![]() About MeHello, and welcome to my Engineering 0715 website! My name is Nicole Hoehn (better known as Nikki to my friends and family) and I am a freshman engineer at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering. I am originally from of Ellicott City, Maryland, which is a suburban area about halfway between Baltimore and Washington D.C. There, I live with my parents and older sister, Jessica, and our spoiled rotten, accident-prone greyhound named Gracie. (Ironically, one of the things I miss the most from home is the dog.) I just graduated this past year from Centennial High School, which is one of the best public schools in Maryland academically. Because of this, I was kept extremely busy with challenging AP and other work-intensive classes all throughout high school, but in the end it was a very rewarding experience and it has made college much more enjoyable. During this time, I also discovered one of my greatest loves—art. Ever since I was a kid, I loved to draw and paint and create with whatever I could get my hands on, and during high school, I learned how to develop my skills as an artist by learning how to draw, paint, sculpt, and take photographs. I became especially interested in traditional black and white photography, and even had some of my photographs published in different magazines and journals. I also became very interested in international travel during high school because I had the opportunity to travel to England, Ireland, Wales, and Australia through the People to People Student Ambassador Program. Despite my limited free time as an engineering student, I hope that I can continue to explore my interests in photography and international travel during my time here at Pitt. I am currently undecided as to which engineering major I will pick, though I am looking closely at Materials Science, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering. I am very interested in helping the sustainability movement and developing alternative fuel sources after I graduate from college, and I believe that those three areas of engineering will help me do so in my future career. I am a very hardworking, dedicated person, but I am also very friendly—feel free to contact me with any questions! Team Project: Pittsburgh Parks ConservatoryOur goal is to continue to collect data to determine how the soils of the Panther Hollow watershed are traveling throughout the area by analyzing orthophotographs, topographical maps, and local soil, with the long term goal of helping the Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory restore Panther Hollow Lake and its watershed.Community PartnerOur partner in this project is the Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory (PPC), which is a non-profit “organization dedicated to preserving, enhancing and restoring the city’s four great parks – Frick, Highland, Riverview and Schenley.” We are currently working with PPC's restoration ecologist, Erin Copeland.
