Graduate Programs
Background The academic programs of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh prepare researchers, educators, and clinicians for the rapidly growing demand of health care providers to meet the needs of a physically active population. The comprehensive Sports Medicine program operates three academic units and a research laboratory, while also providing clinical sports medicine/athletic training services both within the university and externally. The academic program includes an undergraduate athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) , a Masters of Science in Sports Medicine, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Science (specialization in Sports Medicine). The program's research is central to issues contributing new knowledge concerning the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports and orthopaedic injuries. The clinical component of the program includes athletic training services for the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics. |
Academic Programs The Sports Medicine graduate program enrolls on average 10 masters students and six doctoral students. Most graduate students enrolled in the program are full-time and are typically awarded graduate student scholarships, of which two are funded internally and the remainder funded from external sources. |
Research and Scholarship The research center for the Sports Medicine program is the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory (NMRL) . Created in 1990, the NMRL is the allied research facility for the the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh . Under the direction of Dr. Scott Lephart, the NMRL is designed to perform comprehensive orthopaedic and sports medicine applied research related to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Its mission is to integrate allied research with the practice of orthopaedic and sports medicine clinicians to improve the quality of injury management and rehabilitation. |
