Course Descriptions from PeopleSoft as of July 21, 2010
General Overview: Integrated with coursework, students are assigned to an appropriate clinical practicum. Students rotate through the participating clinical facilities and anesthesia related specialty areas. Students develop and implement practical clinical applications of anesthesia theory. Individualized instruction, development of anesthesia management plans, clinical conferences, and case discussions are used to assist the student in conceptualizing, analyzing, and evaluating various anesthesia nursing strategies as they are related to patients' specific needs.
Experiences build on one another from simple cases and techniques to the more complex. Basic anesthesia skills are developed, theoretical principles are applied and ample opportunity is provided for students to learn the administration of safe anesthesia to all patients in a variety of settings. Program enrichment is achieved through experience and instruction in specialty areas such as cardiothoracic anesthesia, neuro anesthesia, transplant anesthesia, and dental anesthesia. Research opportunities for the student are abundant in the clinical settings.
Guided instruction by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and Anesthesiologists affords the student a variety of learning experiences. Although practice settings emphasize the anesthesia care team concept, instruction is designed to strengthen decision making and to achieve independence of thought, judgment and action consistent with responsibility and competency.
